Record Labels

Record labels are companies that deal with the creation and distribution of recorded music. If a band wants to get their music heard then looking for record labels is a wise choice. Record labels make their profits through selling music to distributors and they will then pass on a percentage of this profit to the bands or artists as royalties.

It is important to draw a distinction between major record labels and indie (which stands for independent) record labels. Major record labels tend to be the product of large multinational corporations and they have a great deal of sway in the music industry. Artist who are signed to major record labels are likely to receive a great deal of promotion for their music and experience high sales figures as a result. However, major record labels are generally only interested in signing artists which they believe to have very wide mainstream appeal, also artists who are signed to major record labels may find themselves having to compromise their work in order to appease the label.

Independent record labels on the other hand are often run by an individual or small group of people who are funding artists with their own resources. Independent record labels will typically specialise in one area or genre of music and will release work that major labels would not be interested in. Many successful indie record labels are bought out by larger companies, but continue to specialise in their niche area.
